News outlets have been reporting on a recent “crime wave.” Usually tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns, protests, defunding the police, or social unrest, these articles contain misinformation about crime rates and what is causing them to change.
It is important to note:
There is no “crime wave.” It is false to connect de-incarceration efforts to short-term crime trends. It is false to say “violent crime is increasing.” And we need more time before any credible data can definitively say there is a trend.
